Why is February the worst month for sleep?

Feeling low on energy this month? You aren’t alone! February is actually the hardest month to get the quality sleep out of the year. It takes almost eight additional minutes to fall asleep, and during the night you’re more prone to being restless and waking up more! We can blame the seasonal changes, our mattress, and illness for this major inconvenience to our precious sleep schedules.

Short, Dark Days

When the days are dark and long, it affects our sleep. Did you know we all have biological clocks signaling when we need to fall asleep at night and wake in the morning? That’s your inner self telling the bags under your eyes they need a break! Too bad February hasn’t caught the memo for more daylight, so the darker days mean restless nights.

Debris & Dust Mites

I hate to break it to you, but that cozy, comfy, few years old mattresses of yours may be contributing to your lack of beauty sleep, as well. Did you know that people spend about a third of their lives in bed? Over all that time, you better believe there is some serious baggage you may need to consider breaking up with.

Dead skin and body oils collect in the fabrics of your mattress. Gross right? Dust mites don’t think it’s gross, in fact, your worn-in mattress is their favorite hangout spot! Experts say a typical mattress can house around ten million of the microscopic bugs.

Surprisingly, most of us seem to look the other way when we hear dust mites are our bedmates. Not a great idea because they can be contributing to your seasonal allergies. We know February may be the worst month for sleep, but it may also be the start of spring allergens for you! Dust mites can be the culprit to your sneezing, runny noses, watery eyes, and sinus pressure. They also interfere with asthma, putting you at risk for chest tightness and trouble sleeping because of shortness of breath. Yikes!

Luckily, the solution to your problems is a quick fix! Upgrade that mattress of yours for a dust mite free, extra cozy, and sleep-friendly mattress. Out with the old and in with the new, spring cleaning never felt so good.

Flu Season

And another thing… a lack of sleep contributes to frequent illness. When our bodies don’t get the repair they need during sleep, our immune systems are tired and weak which puts us at increased risk for illness. Watch out flu season! Similar to the immune system, our brain needs rest and repair. During sleep, the brain stores memories from the day and saves information.

Getting a full nights rest on a healthy mattress will help improve your memory and attention span. Plus, those who are sleep deprived are more likely to suffer from slower metabolism and tend to put on weight more easily. Add that to the Valentine’s Day candy . . . double yikes!
