Tips for a Healthy New Year

“I’m going to get healthy this year!” How many times have you said this to yourself? You aren’t alone. In fact, the majority of resolutions made in 2021 were health-focused. Unfortunately, many people will struggle to keep those resolutions. Don’t let yourself be one of them! The best way to have a healthy new year is to pick a few manageable goals and stick with them.

If You Want to Improve Your Health, Improve Your Sleep

A lot of people don’t think about sleep when they think about their health. However, if you’re serious about getting healthy, sleep is your secret weapon. Aside from giving you the energy you need to get active, good sleep is linked to everything from a healthy weight to a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. Sleep even helps your mental health by lowering your risk of depression. Believe it or not, sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is go to bed!

Luckily, there are lots of simple changes you can make in order to improve your sleep. Pick a bedtime and stick to it, and make sure you have a good routine to help you wind down. Make sure you’re getting plenty of exercise, and take it easy on caffeine and alcohol. Finally, make sure you have a good sleeping environment that promotes healthy rest.

Get Active Every Day

Speaking of exercise, the health benefits of regular physical activity are not disputed. Exercise can help you combat a number of health issues and diseases, maintain a healthy weight, and also improve your sleep.

The fact is, most people are just too ambitious when they start on a exercise routine. If you don’t make your plan realistic, you won’t stick to it. Remember the magic number: 150 minutes of exercise every week. That comes to a little over 20 minutes a day. If you’re getting started with exercise, that’s a reasonable goal. In addition, to ensure you don't get bored with your workout regimen, aim to complete a variety of physical activities. If you aren't interested in more basic forms of exercise, like running or weightlifting, try alternatives like taking a dance class, joining a tennis or basketball league, or going on a hike. Also, look for ways to make exercise a part of your normal daily activities. Can you walk to an errand instead of driving? Can you sneak in some squats while you make your morning coffee? Even cleaning can be a workout!

Most of all, fitness should be fun. If working out is a chore, you won’t stick with it. Look for activities you enjoy, listen to fun music while exercising, and mix things up when you get bored.

Make Your Diet Varied, Colorful, and Fun

You probably aren't surprised to see diet advice on a list of healthy new year tips. Much like exercise, a good diet can keep you from experiencing chronic disease and improve your energy levels. It helps you maintain a healthy weight, and even promotes happiness!

There are some easy things you can do to quickly improve your diet. For one thing, meal planning is a tried and true way to make sure you’re eating nutritiously and not accidentally overdoing it on snacks and dessert. Secondly, instead of overhauling your entire diet, look at places where you can make simple and healthy substitutions. Switch out your white bread for whole-grain, or ask for a vegetable side instead of fries next time you grab a burger somewhere. Most importantly, aim for variety! Don’t get stuck in a rut, or commit to a bland diet you don’t want to eat. Try new foods and new recipes regularly, and aim for a colorful plate every time. The more shades of fruits and vegetables you’re eating, the better!
