Five Intentions to Help You Stay Thankful

Thanksgiving is a great time to reconnect with family, see loved ones who you haven’t seen all year, and feel thankful as you reflect over your life. Thanksgiving can also bring a lot of other complicated feelings. It might be the first holiday since losing a loved one, or you might find it hard to be thankful in general. There can be good reason to limit family time. We mean well, but when we pour so much time and energy into our loved ones to make their perfect visit our priority, we can forget to take care of ourselves.

In this blog, you will find five intentions to stay in a thankful state by putting a few boundaries in place, taking care of yourself by getting your beauty rest, and making your bed your happy place during this holiday so you can be thankful for yourself and your family.

*Thankful Intention #1: Live the best version of you, so you can be ready to give to your family.

Boundaries

Nothing goes hand in hand with the holidays like family, chaos, and drama. Let’s face it, even in the healthiest families, the holidays bring this right into our homes. Drama isn’t always bad, but it does induce a heightened state of excitement. These emotions take a lot of extra energy. Which means you might wear out faster than normal. What’s the best way to handle it? Your bed can be your place to get away, take a break, meditate, or take a nap for a few minutes or a few hours. What if this year, your boundary and gift to yourself is to meet yourself on the mattress?

Here are five suggestions to help you create a boundary, recharge yourself, and induce your peaceful state of mind:

  1. Quietly excuse yourself and go lie down on your mattress. Let your body relax.
  2. Take a fifteen- to twenty-minute nap.
  3. Meditate. Turn on some calming music and set a timer for five minutes.
  4. Send someone to the grocery store or out for an errand. Take that time to meet yourself on your mattress and recharge.
  5. Say good night to the family when it’s your bedtime. Your family members are likely excited and want to catch up on lost time. You don’t have to stay up all night to do so.

Just a note about your sleep schedule. The Mayo Clinic suggests adults need at least seven hours of sleep or more each night. Learn more from this article, “Sleep tips: 6 steps to better sleep.” Sleeping well with a regular schedule will be the best Thanksgiving gift you can give to yourself and your family. You’ll be in a better mood and ready to present your best self the next day and continue that fun conversation you were having the night before.

*Thankful Intention #2: Sleep well so you can have fun times with your family and make new memories!

Beauty Rest

The term beauty rest here really means self-care. According to the Oxford online dictionary, self-care is “the practice of activities that are necessary to sustain life and health.” Remember, stress can be good or bad. Stress and holidays can go hand in hand.

This article titled “What does self-care mean to you?” from the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHS) gives examples of self-care. This is important because self-care means different things to different people. NSHS defines self-care as “taking care of physical, nutritional, emotional, and spiritual needs as a whole and finding time to relax and have enough sleep on a daily basis.” The holidays are no different. Getting your beauty rest is important to your health. A lack of beauty rest can show up on our face, making it look dull. Bags under the eyes and a frowny face can leave others wondering why you’re upset, mad, or tired. The number one best thing you can do to take care of yourself is sleep. Make your bed your place of solace, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Self-care starts with you. Prioritize yourself today.

*Thankful Intention #3: Take great care of yourself so you can celebrate your good health.

Your Bed

Your bed is your oasis. The place you call yours. Your bed knows you intimately. It’s grown accustomed to every curve and has adjusted over time to accommodate your life changes. Sometimes, it’s been with you a little too long, but your sentimental heart doesn’t want to part with it. You’ve convinced yourself there’s no other bed you could rest well on and be happy with.

If you’ve started to suspect that you need a new mattress, now is the perfect time to get one. Yes, there will be an adjustment period. But treat yourself to a new slice of heaven to sleep on before the family arrives. Mattresses are continuing to evolve and get better and better with the different hybrids. Your body, mind, and mental state will thank you. Speaking of mental state, check out this blog, “The Impact of Sleep on Mental Health.

As you’re getting your home holiday-ready, take some time to prioritize yourself and your readiness. Assess your bed. Is your mattress your happy place? Is this the one place where you can go relax and recharge? If not, check out this blog, “When Should I Replace My Mattress?” Sometimes it’s small changes you make that can help you feel thankful all the way through the holiday.

*Thankful Intention #4: Choose a mattress you love and find your happy place.

Your Guest Bed

Speaking of replacing your mattress… what’s your guest bedroom mattress like? Now that you’ve had time to think about your boundaries and have a plan to make your bed your happy place this holiday, you can turn your focus and intention to your guest bedroom.

What’s the mattress like in the guest room? In the same way, you need to prioritize your sleep to be the best you, your guests can also benefit from a bed that makes them sleep well. Have you tried sleeping on it for a night? Will this mattress make them feel like they are at their “home away from home”? Good sleep equals a good, positive mindset. Bad sleep—well, we all know what bed sleep leads to… cranky family.

Take a few minutes. Go into your guest bedroom, turn off the lights, and lie down on the mattress. Is this a mattress you would feel restful on? Would you sleep well and wake up happy? Or is it the mattress that’s been recycled to live out the rest of its years under some unsuspecting family member who only visits once a year? If so, it might be time for a Thanksgiving Day miracle. Give the gift of beauty rest to your family—for their sake and yours. It might make all the difference in the quality of your visit with them this Thanksgiving.

*Thankful Intention #5: Update your guest room bed so your family loves coming to visit because it feels like home.
