Staying Cool in the Hot Summer Months

Tue Jun 28 2016

It’s summertime and the livin’ is… sweaty. While summer heat may be great for lake days and running through the sprinkler, it’s not great for getting a good night’s sleep. Cooling down your body temperature is crucial to getting to sleep and sleeping soundly through the night.

Here are some tips to make this happen, even during hot Missouri summers:

    • Turn down the thermostat. This may seem like a no brainer but it’s something that many people don’t do because they are trying to save on their utility bills or keep a cold-natured spouse happy. Turning your thermostat down to 68 degrees (or even cooler!) is ideal. You don’t want your home to be so cold you are shivering, but cooling down signals your body it’s time to sleep.
    • Use a lighter blanket in the summer. Switching out your bedding from the colder winter months for the summer is not only a fun way to switch up your home décor, it can help you cool down enough to sleep well. Consider purchasing a lighter quilt to use in the warmer months instead of a heavy comforter.
    • Purchase a cooling mattress pad. While some mattresses have cooling materials built in, you may not want that year round. If that is the case, you can purchase a cooling mattress pad, often made with cooling gel that will help keep your whole bed cooler than the flip side of the pillow.
