It’s official—summer is here to stay. Whether you enjoy basking in Missouri’s hot summer sun or you can’t wait for the dead of winter to return, many folks often ask our Sleep Experts how they can improve their summer sleeps. While some of our customers complain of sleeping for less amounts of time, others have difficulty falling asleep, even with a new mattress. To alleviate some of this unwanted stress, we’ve compiled a list of steps you can take to improve your summer sleep schedule.
Keep Cool
While this may seem obvious, keeping your room cool can have drastic effects on sleeping. Experts at sleep.org, a subsidiary of the National Sleep Foundation, recommend that the temperature of your room should be between a cool 60 – 67 degrees for a comfortable sleeping temperature. This way, you’ll sleep cool! High summer temperatures in your bedroom can keep your from going to sleep and staying asleep.
Stay Away from Electronics
Summer days are longer, meaning that night time comes later than other seasons in the year. If you decide to stay up longer than usual, or if you go out for a night on the town with friends, try your best to stay away from electronics for the last hour of your night. So, if you want to be in bed by midnight, do your best to stay off your phone and social media by 11. The light emitted from these devices can convince your brain that it’s actually daytime!
Sweat is Your Friend!
If you can, try to workout during the day, or at least find a way to break a sweat. If you can tire yourself out during the day, your body won’t really mind the summer heat and environment. In addition, a workout can help you achieve the deep sleep that you’re looking for—talk about a bonus!
Change Sheets
Do you still have the winter flannels on your bed? If so, you might want to grab some sheets that stay cool! Skip silk, polyester, or satin sheets; instead, consider buying some cotton sheets that are lightweight. Cotton sheets breathe better than other types, helping you get the sleep that you’ve been missing since your last winter hibernation.
