How to Clean a Mattress

Cleaning a mattress isn't at the top of everyone's to-do list. After all, if you change your sheets regularly, why would your mattress need cleaning? Isn't that enough?

Unfortunately, it is not. Mattresses can harbor dust mites, pet dander, dead skin cells, and all sorts of other bits and pieces that can eventually end up between your sheets. You don't necessarily need to clean your mattress every time you make the bed, but keep in mind that cleaning and maintaining a mattress is a great way to make sure it lasts as long as possible. Most importantly, cleaning a mattress can eliminate issues like odors and debris, leading to more comfort and a better night's sleep.

Cleaning Your Mattress Step-By-Step

Luckily, making a plan for how to clean a mattress is simple once you have an idea of what you're doing.

Step One: Read the Care Instructions

While general mattress cleaning instructions will work for most, be sure to take a moment to review the documentation that came with your mattress for cleaning instructions. This can give you helpful information like chemicals to avoid, which can be important for certain kinds of mattresses. If you don't have cleaning instructions for your mattress, don't worry. A quick internet search should give you what you need.

Step Two: Vacuum Your Mattress

Once you're sure you can clean your mattress without damaging it, it's time to get started. First off, strip the bed of any sheets, pillows, or other bedding. Secondly, use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to vacuum the surface of the mattress clean. Be sure to pay special attention to seams and corners, and use a crevice attachment if needed.

Step Three: Spot Cleaning

In general, it's best not to get a mattress that wet. However, if your mattress has stains, some spot cleaning may be appropriate. Dish soap and water or a store-bought enzyme cleaner are usually best for this purpose. Carefully study the surface of the mattress, and gently attempt to remove any stains with your spot cleaner and a soft rag. Be careful not to get the mattress too wet or to use too much product. Allow the mattress to completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Step Four: "Dry" Cleaning

No, you don't need to take your mattress to a dry cleaner! But you do need to remove scents and other unpleasant signs of dirtiness from your mattress. Sprinkle the now-dry surface of your mattress with baking soda, and let it sit for as long as you are able. The longer the baking soda is able to sit on your mattress, the more moisture or odor it will be able to soak up. Once you are ready to continue cleaning, carefully vacuum all of the baking soda away.

Step Five: Flip and Repeat

Is the top of your mattress clean now? Now it's time to flip it over and repeat steps one through four on the other side. If you have not rotated your mattress this year, this is a good time to take care of that as well.

Step Six: Put It Back Together

Once your entire mattress has been thoroughly cleaned, it's time to put the bedding back on it and get ready for a good night's sleep. Before you do so, consider putting on a mattress protector to keep your mattress stain-free and tidy in-between cleanings.
