Ensuring Your Child Gets a Better Nights Sleep

Fri May 01 2015

Much like how you perform better at your job and other activities after a great night’s sleep, your children perform better at school when they are well rested. Getting an adequate amount of sleep each night can result in better homework and behavioral reports from their teacher, as well as an improvement in grades.

Most experts recommend adults get, on average, 7-8 hours of sleep each night, but children often need even more. Most children need at least 9 hours of sleep each night. With a full schedule of afterschool activities such as clubs, sports, homework and family time, it’s easy to see why. Adequate sleep is vital not only to their health as they continue to grow, but for their cognitive and emotional well being as well.

What if your child has difficulty falling asleep? There are steps you can take to ensure a good night’s rest. Children should have a cool, dark bedroom free of loud distractions to ensure the best night’s sleep. If your child finds it difficult to fall asleep each night, try reading them a familiar bedtime story and making them as comfortable as possible. If they are still having difficulty falling asleep, avoid giving them large meals close to bed time. If your child drinks soda or other caffeinated beverages, make sure you cut out caffeine at least six hours prior to their bedtime.

Additionally, kids need a quality mattress just as much as you do. They should be comfortable, supportive, and have enough room for your child to move around as they continue to grow. Passing down an old mattress from either yourself or their sibling may seem convenient, but if it wasn’t comfortable for either of you, then it likely will not be comfortable for them.
