If April showers bring May flowers, what does May bring? Hopefully, better sleep! Join us in celebrating Better Sleep Month, as well as our 25th anniversary, by learning all about how to get better sleep.
Celebrating Better Sleep Month
Here at Beautyrest Sleep Gallery, we know good sleep is important for you. In fact, we've spent the last 25 years helping Missourians get the deep sleep they deserve! But while we're celebrating our 25th anniversary, we're also celebrating Better Sleep Month. Better Sleep Month is an annual event sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, and it's meant to raise awareness about the connections between better sleep and better health. Why is missing sleep so bad for you, and how can you get the better sleep you deserve? You Need Better Sleep to Be at Your Best
Do you feel like you need more sleep? You aren't alone. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three adults don't get enough sleep every night. Not sleeping enough may not seem like a big deal, especially because it's so common. However, not getting enough sleep can have a serious impact on your mental and physical health:- Sleep is when the brain processes memories and makes repairs to your neural cells. A lack of sleep can hurt your cognitive processes, making it more difficult to think or learn.
- Sleep is when your body's immune system does its most important work. A lack of sleep can lead to a suppressed immune system, making you more vulnerable to illness.
- Sleep also has an effect on your metabolism and physical health. Missing sleep can make it harder for your body to repair itself, and can even lead to conditions like pre-diabetes.
How to Get Better Sleep
Whether you're struggling to get enough sleep or just having an occasional off-night, we all have things we can do to improve our sleep hygiene. Not sure where to start? The Better Sleep Council has you covered with these Better Sleep Month tips for improving your sleep:- Turn off your brain before bed. Many people lose sleep because of anxieties that keep them awake. Be intentional about relaxing and making your bedroom a space of calm. Cell phones, television sets, and other things that stimulate your brain and create anxiety are better left in another room.
- Create a bedtime routine. The more regular your bedtime is, the easier sleep will get. Select a reasonable bedtime and select some routine activities you do before bed every night. It may not work immediately, but if you stick with it, your body will learn that these are the cues to begin winding down for the night.
- Get comfortable on the right mattress. All the hard work you do to fix your sleep schedule won't help you out that much if your mattress is the reason you aren't sleeping soundly. If your mattress is over eight years old or visibly damaged, it may be time for an upgrade. And don't forget the accessories, either. Nice sheets, comfortable pajamas, and the right pillow can work wonders for your nightly rest.
