Does it suddenly seem like CBD products are everywhere? Although cannabidiol (CBD) has been around for decades, we're currently in the midst of a CBD craze, with stores stocking everything from CBD oils and lotions to bath bombs, gummies, and pet treats. Although its benefits are still being explored for efficacy, CBD is especially known for promoting relaxation, reducing stress levels, and increasing quality sleep. In fact, Beautyrest Sleep Gallery now offers the Malouf CBD Pillow, which is infused with CBD and includes an organically grown CBD oil spritzer. So what's the deal with CBD and sleep? Could this trendy product help you get a good night's sleep?

CBD and Sleep

What is CBD?

The cannabis family, which includes hemp and marijuana, naturally produces many cannabinoids, which are "chemical compounds that bind or attach to certain receptors in the central nervous system and act as chemical messengers" (source). Two of the most well-known and well-researched cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the substance in marijuana that makes users feel "buzzed" or "high." Unlike THC, CBD does not make users feel "high." In fact, it doesn't produce any psychoactive effects. And according to a report issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential . . . To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

Now, many companies are harnessing CBD's ability to treat a variety of health problems. It has been shown to reduce seizures in children with epilepsy, decrease anxiety, prevent insomnia, and reduce chronic pain (source). While some of the research regarding CBD is a little thin (especially regarding safety and effectiveness in children, pregnant women, and seniors), it shows promising potential.

How does CBD promote good sleep?

CBD may help people manage their pain, anxiety, and restlessness, all of which can affect sleep quality, including how difficult it is to fall asleep and stay asleep. By addressing these root issues, CBD may improve sleep quality. In addition, CBD may interact with the endocannabinoid system (a biological system that may influence stress levels, pain levels, memory, appetite, and sleep) and may promote feelings of rest and relaxation. According to a 2017 review published in Current Psychiatry Reports, CBD may also interact with receptors in the brain that control the body's cycles of sleeping and waking.

Although more research is needed, some studies support the theory that CBD can help improve sleep quality. For example, a study published in Permanente Journal looked at 72 adults who suffered from anxiety and poor sleep. The participants were asked to rate their sleep quality after the first month, and sleep scores improved in 66 percent of the participants. In addition, a nationally representative survey conducted by Consumers Reports found that the majority of people who tried CBD to improve their sleep quality said that it was successful.

Research into CBD's effects is ongoing. While more evidence is needed to make conclusive claims about CBD and sleep, experts consider CBD to be a safe, natural option for people who have difficulty sleeping.

How can you try it?

Extracted from both hemp and marijuana plants, CBD is most commonly available in an oil form. Other options include edibles (gummies, cakes, cookies) and tinctures (which can be added to drinks). You can also use CBD extract in a vaporizer or vape pen.

Our Malouf CBD Pillow includes a CBD infusion in the uniquely designed memory foam, a refreshing CBD spritzer, a soothing sage scent, and a natural cotton cover.
